(Updated 5/5/10 @ 2:40p – Tripp’s contribution) Whatever happens this weekend, Iron Man 2 will be declared a sensation, for good or bad. Below are our thoughts on the upcoming releases for the weekend of May 7-9, 2010. There are two wide releases and two limited releases on the schedule. Please note that at the time of this posting, Tripp has not weighed in on the weekend. Due to his busy schedule, he may not contribute this week. If he does, we will update this post with the new information.
Consensus
This is what we 100% agreed upon regarding this week’s new releases:
Iron Man: Tech only Oscar contender.
Babies: We won’t be seeing it.
Casino Jack: Minor Oscar contender.

ThoughtsI might have been more gung ho about this after I saw the original, but after this long and looking at these previews, I’m not excited at all, but we’ll probably still see it this weekend anyway. |
ThoughtsThe original was clever but I’m not in any rush to see the sequel. |
ThoughtsI really liked the first Iron Man (I will argue it was the better superhero movie of 2008), but this one really isn’t gripping me. |
ThoughtsI loved the first “Iron Man” film, so I will definitely be seeing it this weekend (provided I can get tickets). It should easily surpass “The Dark Knight”‘s opening weekend record and gross between $185-200 million this weekend and possibly become the fourth film in history to gross over $500 million at the domestic box-office. It should also be a major tech contender at the Oscars next year. |

ThoughtsIt’s a tough sell and while it may appeal to a few parents, I doubt it will appeal to many. For me, it’s definitely not that interesting. |
ThoughtsLooks interesting, could be a Documentary Feature contender but something I’m only likely to watch on TV, if ever. |
ThoughtsI have enough baby time to occupy me without spending money at the theatre. |
ThoughtsMaybe it’s because my heart is three sizes too small, but I can’t think of anything I’d like to see less than a documentary about freaking babies. |

ThoughtsHad this released as originally intended in 2009, I might have more faith in this being a “Must See” movie, but after seeing this trailer, I’m fairly sure now why they moved it to the middle of the year. |
ThoughtsAnnette Bening was widely predicted to be a contender for 2009’s Bsst Actress awards but then the film was delayed. Both she and Naomi Watts have other film this year so the momentum has likely passed. |
ThoughtsBeing pushed back usually doesn’t bode well for a movie, so it will take some attention to peak my interest. |
ThoughtsIt sounds way too hokey for my taste. I’ll pass, thank you. |

ThoughtsPolitically charged, this documentary looks like it could be the fun kind, like a Michael Moore doc without him in it. |
ThoughtsYesterday’s scandal, time will tell how it plays. Could be a Documentary Feature nominee next year. |
ThoughtsGibney’s work is usually intriguing, and this is certainly a great story to tell. |
ThoughtsTwo of Alex Gibney’s last three docs went on to score Oscar nominations and “Taxi to the Dark Side” was an Oscar-winner, so this one should be a major contender for Best Documentary Feature. I enjoyed “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room” and “Gonzo: The Life and Works of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson,” so I’m sure I’ll enjoy this one as well. |
