With a slate of five (or six) new wide releases, competition will be fierce for the number two slot since The Super Marion Bros. Movie is guaranteed the first spot in its sophomore frame. Renfield has the most potential to come out on top of the new releases, but The Pope’s Exorcist will give it a run for its money.

WIDE RELEASES

Mafia Mamma

Wesley Lovell: I love Toni Collette, but this looks a bit beneath her talents.

Peter J. Patrick: Looks awfully silly, but the always watchable Toni Collette could make it worth catching.

Thomas La Tourrette: I will admit the trailer made me laugh, Toni Collette looks to be in high form. I am not sure the movie can sustain the joy, but I definitely can imagine seeing it.

Nefarious

Wesley Lovell: Sean Patrick Flannery hasn’t had a good role in a long time and while this looks a bit above the pablum he’s done recently, it’s not really in my wheelhouse.

Peter J. Patrick: Seems to be a more thoughtful horror film than most these days.

Thomas La Tourrette: I am not a fan of horror films, but this one does look better than average focusing on the psychological. Still, I will skip it.

The Pope’s Exorcist

Wesley Lovell: Two possession films in one week is more than enough. Russell Crowe’s film doesn’t look like it plows new ground.

Peter J. Patrick: Looks like the best Exorcist movie since the 1973 classic with Russell Crowe as the Exorcist and Franco Nero as the Pope in their juiciest roles in years.

Thomas La Tourrette: Whereas this horror film looks below average and the trailer made me giggle rather than giving me goosepimples.

Renfield

Wesley Lovell: It looks dreadfully silly and not particularly fun. Too much scenery chewing.

Peter J. Patrick: Dracula revisited with Nic Cage as Drac and Nicholas Hoult as Renfield can’t be all bad.

Thomas La Tourrette: Perhaps the movie succeeds more at comedy than the trailer implies, but it looks like a lame movie.

Suzume

Wesley Lovell: An interesting concept almost overcomes my aversion to anime. Almost.

Peter J. Patrick: Looks like an interesting follow-up for the writer/director of Weathering with You.

Thomas La Tourrette: I have no idea what this anime film is about, but the visuals are pretty fantastic. If it has a plot to go with those, it would be worth seeing.

LIMITED RELEASES

The Limited Slate

Wesley Lovell: Little on this list seems terribly interesting, though Hilma could have the most potential of them all.

Peter J. Patrick: Some interesting foreign films, particularly the animated Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman and the austere Everything Went Fine.

Thomas La Tourrette: The historical drama Hilma looks interesting, mostly because I have seen her work in person. Everything Went Fine looks to be good but perhaps difficult to watch. Blind Willow might be a possibility, but the other two look to be passes.
