Looking at the Weekend: Apr. 6-8, 2018

Only two films seem to be playing (sorry, The Miracle Season) for the first or second place at this week’s box office. Depending on how Ready Player One does in its second week in release, the two films with the best chance of toppling it are the R-rated comedy Blockers and the horror flick A Quiet Place. Based on past history, either film could top the other, but I suspect that A Quiet Place has the bigger buzz, which should lead to its victory for the weekend.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): While the traielr isn’t impressive, early word is, so I’m just a little bit excited for this now. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a fairly lame comedy to me. Tripp Burton (TB): There was some good buzz out of SXSW for this, but I’ll wait to catch up with it on streaming. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are good, but I just think this will be stupid rather than funny. Here’s hoping I am wrong.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): This story might have felt more timely thirty years ago. Now, it seems dated and irrelevant. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Early word is strong, but it’s not something I personally want to see. Tripp Burton (TB): This is a story I’ve long waited to see dramatized, but I’m not sure how much the film looks to live up to its potential. Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have heard great things about Jason Clarke’s performance as Teddy Kennedy, but am not sure the rest of the film will match that.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): Inspirational sports dramas are seldom good and this doesn’t look like it will buck that trend. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Inspirational sports films tend to be fairly routine, no way of telling if this one is an exception. Tripp Burton (TB): I’m not a fan of inspirational sports films, and this doesn’t look like it rises above the genre at all. Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not sure how many sports movies there are about a miracle season, but they tend to look alike.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): The first trailer for this film was eerie in its utter silence. While later trailers have suggested it’s not entirely silent, it still looks like a fascinating picture. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Intense thriller with good early reviews might be the biggest horror hit since Get Out. Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like an interesting change of pace for John Krasinski, and the early buzz has been very positive for it. Thomas LaTourette (TL): This is not my favorite genre, but word of mouth is good and the trailers are unnerving.

Patrick (PP): Early word on this horror film is good, too, but I’m just not sure. Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve heard some interesting things about this and am curious to check it out. Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am somewhat intrigued by the trailer, but am unsure about the movie. It could be really interesting.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): Coming of age dramas involving horses aren’t terribly common and this one doesn’t look terribly important. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Andrew Haigh’s first film since 45 Years looks good, but has been out there at film festivals for quite a while without strumming up a lot of buzz. Tripp Burton (TB): I have little patience for horse movies, but this could be a good version of one. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The fact that this film was pulled from a 2017 release does not bode well. It comes across as a bit sentimental and unbelievable.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): Other than Michelle Pfeiffer, there isn’t sufficient reason to want to see this film. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another film that has been out there at film festivals without drawing much buzz for over a year. It’s a big maybe. Tripp Burton (TB): Supposedly, this is Michelle Pfeiffer’s best role in years, which has me excited to check it out. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does not make me interested in the film, but the reviews make Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance sound amazing, so it might be worth catching.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): While the pedigree of the director and cast should be worth checking out, the trailer just isn’t that great. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Cannes liked it last year. but where has it been? Lynne Ramsey films can be difficult to sit through. Tripp Burton (TB): I had so little patience for Lynne Ramsay’s last film that I am very wary of this. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer makes it look too violent for my tastes, but the reviews are good. I am usure about this one.
