A trio of strong new releases compete for your dollars this week, each threatening to eat a piece of the pie targeting distinct demos. Families will hit Hop, horror fans will hit Insidious and action romance enthusiasts will hit Source Code. The King’s Speech‘s much-maligned PG-13 version will also be releasing this weekend, replacing all existing prints and running only in about 1,000 theaters. It shouldn’t give the film too much boost, but we’ll see.

Consensus

Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.

Hop: While many of us appreciate a good animated film (especially from Pixar), this kind of movie just doesn’t appeal to us (100% Won’t See); and the live-action/animation hybrid doesn’t do well with Oscar (100% No Chance).
Insidious: Even for horror fans, this may be a minor effort (100% Won’t See) which means Oscar will certainly ignore it (100% No Chance).
Source Code: Some aren’t sure whether it will be worth the effort, but a majority of us are likely to watch it (67% Likely) and we cannot at all agree on what the film’s Oscar chances are (33% Split).
In a Better World: We all agree it should be seen, but the medium may vary (33% Split). And, since it’s already an Oscar winner, there’s no point discussing its chances.
Super: We are largely unimpressed with the premise (67% Won’t See) and are certain Oscar won’t pay it any attention (100% No Chance).

Thoughts

I haven’t seen a great animated/live-action cross over since Who Framed Roger Rabbit two decades ago, so I don’t expect better now.

Thoughts

Not my cup of tea.

Thoughts

This looks painful, even by bad animation standards.

Thoughts

I like horror, but nothing in the trailer piques my interest.

Thoughts

Looks like a minor horror flick.

Thoughts

Bad horror movies get dumped at all times of the year, and this seems to be one of them.

I’m not expecting much out of it, but it’s got a strong cast and a modestly intriguing premise, plus after Jake Gyllenhaal risked his career by playing gay in Brokeback Mountain, I’m more than willing to give his films a few bucks.

Thoughts

I liked Duncan Jones’ first film, Moon, so I’m really looking forward to his sophomore effort.

Thoughts

Duncan Jones is an interesting director, but this doesn’t look like a great story.

It won the Oscar, which is the least reason I should see this, but the trailer does look promising, so I will probably catch up with it sometime on DVD.

Thoughts

This year’s Best Foreign Film winner is a must for me.

Thoughts

It has already won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, which means it should at least be worth a rental.

Indies that try to be clever and coy often fail and since I’m not a Rainn Wilson fan, I don’t really feel any desire to see it.

Thoughts

How many of these Superman rip-offs are we going to have this year?

Thoughts

Not even a cast full of actors I love can make me rush out to see this apparent dud.
