After the smash debut this past weekend of family-friendly Rio, the box office should find itself struggling for a big hit with three new wide releases that aren’t likely to light up the box office.

Consensus

Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.

African Cats: Most of this crowd isn’t into the nature documentaries (67%), but we agree (100%) that this is no Oscar contender.
Madea’s Big Happy Family: This isn’t the kind of film we enjoy (100%), nor the kind the Academy rewards (100%).
Water for Elephants: Split on when to see it, if at all (33%), we agree this may be an Oscar contender given the right conditions (100%).
Incendies: We’re all sold on seeing it, just waiting for DVD (100%).
The Greatest Movie Ever Sold: It’s another rental opportunity (67%) with minor Oscar chances (67%).

Thoughts

Being another cutesy animal picture from Disney, it’s very likely I’ll end up watching this, but I cannot be 100% certain.

Thoughts

This may sound cold, but I don’t get why this film is considered a major release. Nature documentaries were big in the 1950s. In recent years, they’ve been relegated to the Discovery Channel where you can get your fill of these things.

Thoughts

Nature documentaries aren’t my thing.

This is so far out of my wheelhouse that it might as well be in another universe.

Thoughts

Doesn’t look much different than the previus umpteen Tyler Perry movies.

Madea movies aren’t my thing

It’s one of those train wrecks you want to see just to say you’ve seen it, but I can wait until DVD since I doubt it will be much more than a possible tech Oscar nominee.

Thoughts

The year’s first literate-appearing film based on a best seller. Hopefully it lives up to expectations. It looks like a sure bet for an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design if nothing else.

Thoughts

The film looks pretty dreadful, but the source material has it’s fans, so it could be worth checking out.

Thoughts

It looks quite good, but this is a definite rental, not a big screen kind of outing.

Thoughts

An Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Film last year, it looks interesting but not enough to go out of my way to find it in theaters. I’ll wait for the DVD.

Thoughts

The Oscar-nominated film looks interesting, but can probably wait for home viewing.

While I think it looks quite funny and will likely be scathingly informative, I won’t be able to catch it until DVD anyway.

Thoughts

Morgan Spurlock’s documentaries are highly overrated.

Thoughts

Morgan Spurlock is an interesting director, and this looks like a return to Super Size Me form.
