A large number of new releases this week, all wide, all trying to take a weak weekend’s box office crown. This week finds the releases of kid-friendly Nanny McPhee Returns, horror fan-friendly Piranha 3D, spoof-friendly Vampires Suck, urban-friendly Lottery Ticket and woman-friendly The Switch. It covers nearly ever major demographic (except older viewers)…and with only Piranha and Vampires targeting the same demo, it should make for an interesting weekend. We will update Wes’ predictions as soon as they are available. (Update: 8/18, 1:52p – Added Wes’ comments and added consensus)

Consensus

Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.

Nanny McPhee Returns: Not on our radar (75%) for viewing or Oscar (100%).
Piranha 3D: No one wants to see (100%) this non-Oscar contender (100%).
Vampires Suck: Another no see (100%), no Oscar (100%).
Lottery Ticket: We aren’t watching (100%) and neither will the Oscars (100%).
The Switch: Evenly split on whether to watch the film (50%), but we’re certain it will have no Oscar future (100%).

Thoughts

Didn’t see the original because I had no desire to. The sequel does not change my mind.

Thoughts

The first one was surprisingly good but this is not something I’m in any rush to see.

Thoughts

Didn’t see the first one, and am in no rush to do so.

Thoughts

Another sequel no one asked for.

Thoughts

I don’t mind cheese, but this is the six-month-old stinky kind you find under your couch where you had forgotten you dropped it.

Thoughts

I don’t like piranhas and I don’t like 3D.

Thoughts

Looks like it could be a little fun, but not enough to get me to seriously seek it out.

Thoughts

Another remake no one asked for.

Thoughts

I’m sorry, but I really love these kinds of movies and making fun of Twilight only makes me want to see it more.

Thoughts

Vampires may suck but so do titles like this and very likely the film as well, parody or not.

Thoughts

Looks like another in a line of horrible, unfunny and unnecessary spoofs.

Thoughts

Another spoof movie no one asked for.

Thoughts

Dumb and pointless. Those are two of my least favorite movie descriptors.

Thoughts

A comedy about greed – a terrible premise, probably a terrible movie.

Thoughts

I keep seeing the previews for this, and it looks atrocious.

Thoughts

Another crappy urban comedy no one asked for.

Thoughts

I know it’s going to be terrible, but Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston might be able to make it work.

Thoughts

I’m normally not interested in formulaic Jennifer Aniston movies but I might give this one a try just to thumb my nose at Bill O’Reilly and the Fox New Channel for their ridiculous reaction to the film’s premise.

Thoughts

What a horrible movie-going weekend.

Thoughts

Another Jennifer Aniston chick flick no one asked for.
