This week features another lackluster line up of competitors. I don’t think The Help will nab a second week at the top as Colombiana may have just enough genre fans in attendance to propel it to the top and if not it, either of the other new releases could do well enough.

Consensus

Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.

Colombiana: Another generic genre thriller is the label that is most likely to get applied to this revenge thriller.
Don’t Be Afrid of the Dark: Horror remakes are quite iffy and this one seems to put the emphasis on iffy.
Our Idiot Brother: This is a hit-or-miss film. Some think it looks refreshing, others think it looks stale.
Brighton Rock: Another film no one’s exactly going out of their way to see.
Chasing Madoff: Unless you have tired of the whole Bernard Madoff affair, this could be an interesting documentary.

This isn’t my kind of picture, so if critics like it, I might catch it on DVD.

Thoughts

Looks like another tired revenge flick.

Thoughts

Looks like the kind of August action release that has been slipping into the sound categories as of late.

Nothing in the trailer really piqued my interests despite being a fan of the genre.

Thoughts

This is a quasi-remake of a 1963 TV movie that has its fans, of which I am not one.

Thoughts

Even the Guillermo del Toro name attached to this can carry it to any sort of contention.

If critics start coming out in praise of the film, I might catch it at the theater, but at this point, DVD may be the only way.

Thoughts

Good cast, talented neophyte film director, looks promising.

Thoughts

These stupid comedies don’t go anywhere come awards time, no matter how hard their fans might try to push them.

Helen Mirren’s the only reason to watch this one as the trailer doesn’t make it look too appetizing.

Thoughts

This is a souped up remake of a 1947 British film based on Graham Green’s 1938 novel neither of which neeeds to be improved upon.

Thoughts

Not even the Graham Greene pedigree can put this into contention.

It’s interesting enough that my penchant towards ignoring documentaries might be ignored when it hits DVD.

Thoughts

Got enough of this on the news.

Thoughts

This relevant documentary, especially to the Hollywood community that lost a lot of money to Madoff, could play well with the doc committee.
