In the battle between Barbie and J. Robert Oppenheimer, I’m pretty sure Barbie has the higher name recognition. Will that mean the movie is a bigger hit? Early ticket sales suggest it will be. This is the first time Christopher Nolan has tried to see his film as an action film when the subject matter doesn’t scream action and that may be why it does not succeed.

WIDE RELEASES

BARBIE

OPPENHEIMER

Barbie

Wesley Lovell: Greta Gerwig is one of the few filmmakers I will always turn out for.

Peter J. Patrick: Not sure this will live up to the hype, but I will definitely give it a look.

Thomas La Tourrette: I still have no idea what this is about, but it has my interest.

Oppenheimer

Wesley Lovell: Christopher Nolan’s got a big head and the way this drama has been advertised doesn’t feel appropriate, so I’m reticent.

Peter J. Patrick: The first film this year that I have really been looking forward to.

Thomas La Tourrette: This could prove one of the big players of the year with multiple Oscar nominations above and below the line.

LIMITED RELEASES

THE BEANIE BUBBLE

COBWEB

FEAR THE NIGHT

SEE YOU ON VENUS

The Limited Slate

Wesley Lovell: The Beanie Bubble has a solid cast, but that’s the only reason worth seeing it.

Peter J. Patrick: Cobweb looks like it could be an interesting Saturday afternoon thriller but none of the others look all that interesting.

Thomas La Tourrette: None of these look terribly interesting. Cobweb had the best trailer, but horror films are just not my thing. The Beanie Bubble sounds the most interesting, but a mediocre trailer dimmed my hopes for it.
