With tepid debuts for last week’s openers, it’s certain that Mission: Impossible – Fallout will take the top spot at the box office. How high will it climb? The prior opened to $55 million on its way to $195 million. All of the prior films did well and with critics behind it, I see no reason the latest won’t top $200 million easily.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): This has been one of the best and most consistent series of spy thrillers in history and word is the most recent film is quite an achievement. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sixth edition looks ultra-violent but critics seem to like it so I’ll give it a chance. Tripp Burton (TB): I lost track of this series a while ago, but I’ve heard good things and this looks promising. Thomas LaTourette (TL): This has been a fun franchise, and word is that this may be the best film of the bunch. I am looking forward to it.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): A mildly amusing trailer is the only reason I have any remote interest in this. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Uninspired animation and fart jokes, not something I want to endure. Tripp Burton (TB): This trailer makes my daughters and I laugh every time, and I’m excited to check it out. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer looks lame, but the reviews are surprisingly good. However, I think it is aimed squarely at kids and will not be that exciting for adults.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): Wuxia films aren’t much my cup of tea, so I’m not terribly interested. Peter J. Patrick (PP): The trailer gave me a headache – no need to punish myself by sitting through the whole thing. Tripp Burton (TB): I know nothing about this series and this doesn’t look like my sort of thing. Thomas LaTourette (TL): It is a sumptuous trailer, but not one that really drew me in. I am not excited by it.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): Without Timothée Chalamet, I doubt I would have much interest in this. Peter J. Patrick (PP): In film festivals since March of last year, this looks like an Ok at best coming of age drama. Tripp Burton (TB): I’m excited to see Timothée Chalamet’s career bloom, but this doesn’t look like a worthy follow up to Call Me By Your Name. Thomas LaTourette (TL): Timothée Chalamet has proved himself a good actor, but this looks like a vapid waste of his talents, with tropes from many other coming of age films.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): The story isn’t very interesting, but the backdrop for the story is. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Stardom at last for Kelly Macdonald? We can but hope. Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a neat little film. Thomas LaTourette (TL): It has a few reasonably good early reviews, but it does not look like a very interesting movie, and similar to many we have seen before.
