The king of the box office is set, but it’s how the competing properties perform that will be more interesting…that and how badly will the distaste fans had for the second Transformers film affect its chances for a $100 M plus weekend.

Consensus

Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.

Larry Crowne: It could be refreshing, but there’s trepidation about its quality, though that won’t matter to Oscar if it’s a big enough hit.
Monte Carlo: It’s the genre we least like to watch, though the director has done good work in the past. Of course, that doesn’t mean the Academy will fall for it.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon: More of the same from one of the least popular directors among serious film lovers, though the Academy does love its technical merits.
The Perfect Host: This dark comedy could be quite enjoyable, though not enough for Oscar consideration.

Thoughts

The trailer looks charming, but early critics aren’t positive, so I’m not quite sure where I sit with this one.

Thoughts

Tom Hanks’ first theatrical outing as a director since That Thing You Do! looks mildly entertaining. Could be a decent 4th of July crowd-pleaser.

Thoughts

This looks like a refreshing summer film, and if it becomes a big enough hit, a possible dark horse Oscar contender.

Thoughts

Why does Tom Hanks keep sticking with Nia Vardalos? She hasn’t been relevant since “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” 9 years ago. Well, at least we don’t have to see her on-screen this time around.

Thoughts

I’m really not that interested in watching a film geared towards tween girls.

Thoughts

I was a big fan of Bazucka’s last film, The Family Stone, so I’m hoping this will turn out to be more interesting than it looks at first glance.

Thoughts

A lot of unappealing actors in an unappealing looking comedy.

Thoughts

I make it a point not to see movies aimed at teenage girls.

Thoughts

Against my better judgement, I’ll probably be checking this out this weekend. I love disaster movies and this looks like a cross between disaster and Michael Bay, so it might not be bad, but it probably will be.

Thoughts

They’re still making sequels to Transformers? Why? Oh, I get it – they make money.

Thoughts

I never saw the first two, so why start now?

Thoughts

I thought the first “Transformers” film was tolerable, but the second film was one of the absolute biggest pieces of crap I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I am done with this franchise and especially with Michael Bay.

I think this looks like fun even if it probably won’t be that good overall.

Thoughts

Looks like it could be an entertaining black comedy.

Thoughts

I’m real interested in seeing David Hyde Pierce in a very different kind of role.

Thoughts

It could be interesting, but I need to read some reviews before I decide on this one.
