While DC has actively avoided releasing its films direct to streaming, Disney has not. That created the impression that people who enjoy their animated products can just watch them online, depressing turnout. That’s why before the pandemic, Elemental would have been a huge hit and easily dominated The Flash, but after it will be lucky to come in a distant second. I could be surprised, but that seems to be the trend.

WIDE RELEASES

THE BLACKENING

ELEMENTAL

THE FLASH

The Blackening

Wesley Lovell: I love horror spoofs and this one looks fun.

Peter J. Patrick: This is a tedious looking comedy-horror film.

Thomas La Tourrette: It could be a promising premise, but it had worn out its welcome by the end of the trailer.

Elemental

Wesley Lovell: One always has to have hope for Pixar, though early word is lightly concerning.

Peter J. Patrick: This is a simplistic looking cartoon message movie.

Thomas La Tourrette: This will surely be an Oscar contender, but it looks like a lesser Pixar production.

The Flash

Wesley Lovell: It’s gotten some solid early word, but the trailers haven’t exactly made it look great.

Peter J. Patrick: Looks like one of the better superhero movies.

Thomas La Tourrette: For a movie about the Flash, the trailer seemed more about Batman. The reviews are mixed so far, which does not bode well for it.

LIMITED RELEASES

ASTEROID CITY

The Limited Slate

Wesley Lovell: I like Wes Anderson as much as the average film buff, but the trailers for this have been inconsequential and sadly forgettable.

Peter J. Patrick: Early reviews of Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City have not been good but even his bad films have an element of good in them so I will probably want to see this at some point, just not right away.

Thomas La Tourrette: Asteroid City should be enjoyable, even though it looks like a lesser Wes Anderson effort.
