From Disney to Marvel (Sony), audiences are going to be overcome with options this weekend and the fight for first place will come down to these two films, but Spider-Man being in its first weekend and Mermaid in its second, that should give Spidey the edge.

WIDE RELEASES

THE BOOGEYMAN

SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE

The Boogeyman

Wesley Lovell: I love horror, but films that look like this seldom pique my interest.

Peter J. Patrick: Seems to be a minor horror film.

Thomas La Tourrette: Horror films are not my favorite and the reviews are not the best for this one. I’ll pass.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Wesley Lovell: The first film was great, but can the follow up be as well? We’ll see.

Peter J. Patrick: If it’s half as good as the original, it will be worth a look.

Thomas La Tourrette: The trailer did not excite me, but the first one was entertaining and won the Oscar, so hopefully this one will be close to as good.

LIMITED RELEASES

CONCERNED CITIZEN

PAST LIVES

SIMULANT

UNIDENTIFIED OBJECTS

The Limited Slate

Wesley Lovell: Of these, only Simulant looks like it will be up my alley (my cheese alley more specifically). Concerned Citizen could also have potential, but the rest I’ll pass on

Peter J. Patrick: Only the critically acclaimed Past Lives seems to have much potential.

Thomas La Tourrette: The reviews of Past Lives make it sound like a winner and it could be an Oscar contender. The others are a mixed bag with some intriguing ideas but not cohesive enough to make me fully commit to seeing them.
