Now that Memorial Day is over, it’s time for another weekend of one major wide release with X-Men guaranteed to top the weekend. (Updated 6/1/11, 6:11p: to add Wes H.’s contributions. Consensus not directly amended. Additional commentary provided)

Consensus

Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.

X-Men: First Class: It’s a genre for different audiences and each of us approached it differently (33%) while agreeing it could be a contender in the tech categories. (another Must See vote bringing that total to 50% and the unanimity of Oscar consideration remains intact)
Beautiful Boy: Another divisive film that gets credit for being an interesting concept (33%) and could be a minor Oscar contender (67%). (a second undecided vote makes it 50% and another non-contender vote makes 50% there as well)
Beginners: Christopher Plummer is a surefire Oscar contender (100%) and the film seems to be a likely catch for our contributors (67%). (We all still agree on its Oscar chances while Wes adds a second Undecided vote making a split 50-50 decision)
Film Socialisme: While we’re not sure the film is something we would certainly watch, Jean-Luc Godard’s fans will certainly like it (67%) but we don’t think the Academy will regard it as highly as they (67%). (We now have two corresponding votes on each side for both watching and Oscar making both 50%)

Thoughts

As a fan of the X-Men franchise, this is a must see for me and considering how many positive comments I’ve read from other film critics, this is certainly one to watch.

Thoughts

For those that like this sort of thing it looks fine. I just don’t happen to be one of them.

Thoughts

This looks like an interesting set up to the superhero series, with a lot of really wonderful actors thrown into the mix.

Thoughts

I liked the first movie, loved the second movie, tolerated the third movie, and hated the fourth movie. However, Bryan Singer is back, albeit as a producer, and the film is getting great reviews, so I will definitely be seeing this.

Thoughts

This looks like an emotionally charged drama that could have far-reaching implications including minor Oscar consideration.

Thoughts

Looks interesting, but sad.

Thoughts

This looks intriguing and well-acted, but I am in no rush to go check it out.

Thoughts

It will likely be out of the race come Oscar time, especially considering that “We Need to Talk About Kevin” basically tackles the same subject matter and will be fresher in Oscar voters’ minds.

Thoughts

Part of me expects this to be a rather routine comedy/drama, but Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer could be a potent combination.

Thoughts

Christopher Plummer’s performance is said to be Oscar worthy making it the first film of 2011 with any acting Oscar hope.

Thoughts

This looks like a real charming film, and Christopher Plummer is said to be wonderful.

Thoughts

It doesn’t seem like the kind of movie I’d enjoy, but Christopher Plummer might contend for Best Supporting Actor. I might check it out on DVD if he ends up being recognized by Oscar.

Thoughts

Foreign films don’t find their way to my neck of the woods often, so I would probably have to wait until DVD to even catch it, though I’m undecided on whether I want to see it or not.

Thoughts

Godard is a master filmmaker but not someone who should be approached casually. Recommended only for those who know what to expect.

Thoughts

The new Godard film should always be looked at as a film to see, but I’ll wait until DVD.

Thoughts

It’s the newest Godard film, so I will probably check it out. But I can wait for DVD.
