There aren’t a lot of options this weekend, so Tyler Perry’s latest Madea film should have little trouble topping the charts or coming in second to the second weekend of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World more than likely.

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer intrigued me as a parental-esque Single White Female. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Neil Jordan’s first film in some time could be one of his better films, hard to tell from the trailer. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer starts well, but I was just not that interested by the end.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): I haven’t loved the Madea films, but they are a good timewaster at least. Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’ve yet to see any of Perry’s Madea films, don’t think I’ll start with this one. Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have seen none of these films so far, and this does nothing to make me change that.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s a different take on an all-too common concept that might be worth watching, but probably not. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Too frenetic for my tastes. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The excessively violent trailer has convinced me that I do not need to see this martial arts film.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): The subject matter is important, but the film looks paint-by-numbers. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Worthy story, lackluster presentation – wait for it to show up on TV. Thomas LaTourette (TL): A very earnest trailer just does not whip up excitement for this film. It may end up being good, but it has a lot to prove to get there.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer makes this film look a bit dull and I cannot say that the premise was well executed in it. Peter J. Patrick (PP): These out to sea dramas are often out to sea themselves, this one looks no different. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does not quite show enough, which may be a good thing, but it also leaves one hanging at the end.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): If you remember what this film is about months after seeing the trailer, more power to you. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Third film in Christian Petzold’s trilogy that also included Barbara and Phoenix looks just as compelling. Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not certain if the updating from 1942 to the present will work, but it makes an interesting trailer.

Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I like Dev Patel, this doesn’t look in service to his talents. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Michael Winterbottom’s latest thriller starring Dev Patel could be his best in some time. Thomas LaTourette (TL): I want to like this film, but the trailer just does not do enough to make that happen.
