This week, two major new wide releases compete for the box office crown. Here are our thoughts.

Consensus

Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.

The Hangover, Part II: We aren’t quite sure to think as we select everything from Must See to Won’t See (25%), but we are sure the Academy will reject this sequel.
Kung Fu Panda 2: Another wide array of votes (25%) and a little more unity on its Oscar chances (50%).
The Tree of Life: Despite the disparity, Terrence Malick’s film is a rare four-fer of Must See (100%) and Major Oscar contender (100%).

Thoughts

I waited until the original was on DVD to watch it. I can wait for this too.

Thoughts

Hated the first one, no interest in seeing the sequel.

Thoughts

The first one was amusing enough, but I didn’t love it as much as others, and this looks like a lot more of the same.

Thoughts

“The Hangover” was hilarious, and while this looks to be a complete retread of the first film with a change of scenery, I’ll still probably end up seeing it. Call me cautiously optimistic.

Thoughts

The original was a surprise hit and quite a bit of fun. I’ll gladly put my money down to see if they can continue the streak of quality.

Thoughts

I’m too old for this stuff.

Thoughts

The first one was a surprising delight, and I am looking forward to catching up with this one, but I can wait until DVD.

Thoughts

The first film was delightful and one of the best attempts by DreamWorks Animation. I am looking forward to seeing this film, but I hope that it is a better sequel than “Shrek 2” was.

Thoughts

Even before this film won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes film festival, this was a must see event.

Thoughts

The mixed reviews scare me a bit, but I plan to see this one for myself and make up my own mind.

Thoughts

The film hasn’t looked as intriguing to me as other Malick films, but the Palme d’Or last weekend sealed the deal for me.

Thoughts

I briefly worked as a production assistant on this film, so there is no way that I won’t see it. I’ve waited forever for this to come out!
