Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be going down this weekend as Tom Cruise’s first new feature in four years rides the wave of sensational reviews to a box office-topping victory 36 years ago. That film spent a total of three non-consecutive weeks at the top of the box office, its first, fourth, and 19th weekends of release. That film topped out at $180.5 million, which is around $465 million in today’s dollars. Can this film perform comparably? It’s not likely, but anything is possible.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ve never watched the show, so I’m obviously not the audience for this and the trailer did nothing to convince me I should be interested. Peter J. Patrick (PP): For fans of the long-running animated TV series. Thomas LaTourette (TL): Not knowing the show, the trailer does little to appeal to non-fans.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): I remember (vaguely) seeing the original film in theaters back in the mid-80s, but my memories of it aren’t that intense, so I’m not sure I’m that interested in its sequel, even with the good reviews. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Rave reviews out of Cannes seem to elevate this 3-year-old film’s prospects. The original has a legion of fans. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The critics love it and I imagine it will be enjoyable, if a little too testosterone filled for my taste.

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer’s forgettable and while the plot might be important, I can’t get excited about something I can’t easily remember. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Festival hit about a teenage girl searching for her missing father looks intriguing. Thomas LaTourette (TL): A less than compelling trailer does little to sell this family/mystery drama.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): Another dreadful action thriller that wants to be so much more than it will be. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks routine, but with a script by Paul Schrader, it should have a little something extra. Thomas LaTourette (TL): There seem to be a lot of films out there about hitmen wanting to retire, and this looks below average.
