While there are ostensibly two wide releases this coming weekend, only one of them has any potential to make a box office splash. Belfast is a film festival hit from director Kenneth Branagh. Those kinds of films rarely ever top the box office and that will be especially true right now in the late-pandemic box office. No, the big film releasing this weekend with a chance at the top spot is Clifford the Big Red Dog. Looking to be a big family-focused event, the film’s trailers are charming enough, but against the second weekend of Disney’s Eternals, I wouldn’t expect it to open at the top.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): Every major Oscar contender is a must see. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Genuine audience pleaser should be an Oscar frontrunner in numerous categories. Thomas LaTourette (TL): This is an early front runner for the Oscar, but it will be interesting to see if it holds up to the hype. It should score a lot of nominations, and probably deservedly so.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer is cute enough, but not very interesting. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Kid’s film looks awfully dumb even for 5-year-olds. Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks made for kids and probably has a few laughs for adults, but very few.

Individual Commentary:
Wesley Lovell (WL): The film looks unfocused and familiar. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Haven’t we had enough post-apocalyptic thrillers for a while? Thomas LaTourette (TL): Some early reviews make it sound decent, but this dystopian thriller’s trailer does not grab one.
