At the beginning of each year, I close off the Oscar Preview article until after the Oscars and then once those are in the rearview mirror, I look at everything released to that point to see where the potential Oscar contenders could be. Looking back at the last two-and-a-half months reveals three films that had potential, but which underperformed with audiences. That alone might be enough to sink their chances, but the early release will also create issues. Ant-Man and the Wasp, Marlowe, and 65 were those films. The first and third of them were Visual Effects contenders while the middle would compete in Production Design and Costume Design. Looking at how they performed, Ant-Man is still possible, though decreasingly likely as the year progresses while the other two were disappointments enough to crater any hopes they ever had.
