I can’t possibly understand how anyone could hate Swank in this movie, or think it wasn’t much of a stretch. She gained 20lbs of muscle and learned boxing from scratch (including getting an infection on her foot that nearly required a 3-week hospital stay, which she kept a secret from Eastwood because that’s what her character would do). Few actresses could (or would) tackle the difficult role solely because of the extreme physical requirements necessary. If it’s not a stretch, then neither was De Niro in Raging Bull! It’s heartbreaking to watch her untamed spirit held in check by her injury, and have to deal with such disgusting, unappreciative family members when all she wants to do is be generous and kind. How anyone couldn’t have been moved by her character is beyond me.
That being said, I totally voted for Theron’s masterful and unrecognizable role as the prostitute 🙂
I don’t dislike Swank’s performance. I’m just saying that it doesn’t seem like much of an acting stretch for her. So what if she’s a method actor? Does that make her better than others who aren’t? Not at all. Regardless, I think most of the actresses on this poll were better than Swank Witherspoon the exception.
1) love your response.
2) love the swank
3) hate the swank
4) hate that manipulative m$b was ever
Made. But she played by the Oscar rules
And won.
5) admired her for technical dedication
6) hated her acting.
After considering the decade, I would have to say … I agree. That IS the most overpraised performance of the decade (for Best Actress category, anyway; I would have to revisit the other three categories to know where she stands, but I’m sure she comes close, if not takes the cake). That Oscar win was all about the campaign and all the singing and instrument learning Reese had to do to prepare for the role. I’d be surprised if she ever got nominated again. Unless of course, she gets all down and dirty and plays a prostitute with a heroin condition. Love me some Reese, but also call them like I see them.
oh, and one more thing …
7) Do not like that Swank has TWO oscars. Yuck! But, she played by the rules. Too bad Monster didn’t come out one year later.
