   This has been some year for category confusion. So far, there have been no less than seven performers receiving recognition in both lead and supporting categories for the same role: Christian Bale, Paul Dano, Michael Keaton, Rooney Mara, Mark Ruffalo, Jason Tremblay, Alic1a Vikander (The Danish Girl), Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina)

   I can see it happening in Barry Fitzgerald’s case, before AMPAS changed the rules. It seems to me, however, that some members of a small critics group would almost assuredly have to vote for Dano in both categories for him to receive two nominations; and as a consequence leave one actor out. I guess that is no big deal, when the Phoenix group has 7 Supporting Actor nominees and 3 Supporting Actress nominees (Vikander, twice).

   Am I right in saying that an Academy member can vote for a performer in both acting categories for the same role, even though a performer cannot be nominated in both categories for the same role?

      That’s an interesting question.

      I don’t think there’s anything preventing a voter listing whomever he wants in both categories. The bigger question is what do the bean counters do with it. Do they count both or ignore both?

         All I know is that the individual gets the nomination in the category in which he or she first gets over the finish line. I’m not sure how they can adjudicate, but here are the two paragraphs from the rules dealing specifically with this situation:

         3. A performance by an actor or actress in any role shall be eligible for nomination either for the leading role or supporting role categories. If, however, all the dialogue has been dubbed by another actor, the performance shall not be eligible for award consideration. Singing that is dubbed will not affect the performer’s eligibility unless it constitutes the entire performance. The determination as to whether a role is a leading or supporting role shall be made individually by members of the branch at the time of balloting.

         4. The leading role and supporting role categories will be tabulated simultaneously. If any performance should receive votes in both categories, the achievement shall be placed only on the ballot in that category in which, during the tabulation process, it first receives the required number of votes to be nominated. In the event that the performance receives the numbers of votes required to be nominated in both categories simultaneously, the achievement shall be placed only on the ballot in that category in which it receives the greater percentage of the total votes.

         I’m really hoping for a Keisha Castle-Hughes level bump for Rooney Mara. It would irk me to no end to see her in Supporting Actress.

      As for how a group could do that. It isn’t necessary for the group to vote them in both categories. It is entirely possible that the fifth- or sixth-place finisher in either category could have had very few total votes comparatively and thus even a small contingent resisting the category fraud could push it into the other category as well.

   Is this the first time a critics group nominated the same person in two categories for the same performance? Paul Dano, Love & Mercy, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor?

      It was brought up on their Facebook page where they posted the nominations and, indeed, he’s double-nominated. It’s Barry Fitzgerald all over again.
