Apart from the surprise inclusion of Nicole Kidman in the critically lambasted The Paperboy, these results are largely what we expected. Some noteworthy exclusions: Joaquin Phoenix failed to enter the race for Best Actor, making him seem like the most vulnerable of this year’s competitors. SAG went for Marion Cotillard in Rust and Bone, but the more lauded Emmanuelle Riva was left out in the cold. Javier Bardem made it into the supporting race for Skyfall, but illogically Judi Dench didn’t squeeze into the actress side, though beloved Maggie Smith managed a nod for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in spite of being a periphery contender.

Other than Phoenix, the one performance that was damaged most by an exclusion at SAG is Ann Dowd. She had started to emerge as a strong contender for a nomination for Compliance, and could still be nominated if the Globes still give her a shot, but SAG not recognizing a journeyman character actor is more damaging than helpful. And if Alan Arkin gets an Oscar nomination for his passable, but unenlightened work in Argo, I’ll be severely disappointed, but Bardem getting an Oscar nod for his work in Skyfall would be devastating to me.
