I never found a live stream of the BAFTA awards, so I had to get this information from the Variety live blog. As the “evening” progressed, 12 Years a Slave seemed like it was going down to defeat, losing Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. It held on to win Best Picture by a hair while many other awards went as expected. Whether BAFTA was voting to make prognosticators confused or they were doing their own brand of bizarre For Your Consideration stuff. Either way, it was a bizarre night with lots of guessing up until the very end. Whether this foreshadows the Oscars or not is anyone’s guess at this point.

The Baftas have always give weird supporting acting awards, so Captain Phillips is no surprise

I love that they give the Editing award to Rush, it is my favorite editing work of the year after Gravity, so it’s nice so see that film recognize when the academy unjustly snubbed it.

Philomena was an obvious (give it to the british) choice

I’m getting a 1972 vibe this year, with 12 Years a Slave in The Godfather role and Gravity in the Cabaret role (minus the acting wins)

  It may be worse than that. There’s a good possibility that 12 Years a Slave could be the first film since Mutiny on the Bounty back in 1935 to win only one Oscar and that Oscar being Best Picture.

    Let’s recall that BAFTA did not pick JLaw last year for Silver Linings Playbook as the Academy did. So, they had no reason NOT to give her an award. Two at such a young age will be a determining factor.
    
    Philomena was an entirely British production and as much as BAFTA likes to think of itself as a precursor now, they still have British-centric decisions and I suspect that’s what put Philomena over the top.
    
    Those are the only two categories I see 12 Years a Slave taking at this point outside of Best Picture. That would make 3, which is a fairly common number for Best Picture winners in recent years.
