The Grammy nominations are sometimes idiosyncratic. They are always poor predictors. The Grammy deadlines typically mean that several prior-year films make it into the mix, with this year being no exception. Completely disregard the Compilation Soundtrack category as none of them are Oscar eligible (this year or last). Toss out three-fifths of the soundtrack category and eliminate two of from Original Song.

What remain are five contenders that all have fairly decent shots at nominations. The Gone Girl score and “Everything Is Awesome” from The Lego Movie are pretty much assured nominees. The Grand Budapest Hotel might be a stretch for the more mainstream Academy who has other places to recognize Alexandre Desplat this year (and he’s not quite in the John Williams double-nomination-capable boat yet).

As for the remaining two songs, the Academy has been very weird about recognizing closing credits songs and I suspect they will bypass yet another Hobbit song in spite of nominating all three of such songs from the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. As to the Glen Campbell song. I suspect there may be just enough country fans in the Academy to give the aging legend and Oscar nomination.
