And so the Globes have gone out with a largely-unsatisfying conclusion. Few major surprises, especially in the major categories, have made for a rather dull experience. Boyhood might be the most unusual Best Picture winner in Oscar history…if it can hold on.

    “The Grand Budapest Hotel” win was not a surprise to me. It is upbeat and quirky in a fun way. As great as “Birdman” is, it doesn’t feel like a comedy because it is so dark.

      That’s true, Birdman is a comedy the same way American Beauty is

        Except that “American Beauty” won best drama at the Globes. “Budapest” is more along the lines of what HFPA would choose as best comedy, though “Into the Woods” had a shot at winning the category by virtue of being a musical.

    I don’t understand Wesley, why are the surprises dull?

    I like the surprise winners (except for: how to train smaug 2 over lego movie or big hero 6).

    Loved that Grand Budapest won over birdman and Richard Lindkater for director

    Hated it that Interstellar lost for best score but the one that won was very good and touching.

    Hated the award for george clooney, I was bored to hell those 20 minutes.

    But I don’t understand Wesley: If all the winners would have been the ones that were expected, so the awards are predictable, is it a good or bad experience?

      I didn’t say the surprises were dull, I said that there were few surprises, which makes for a dull experience. Sticking with the films and performances that have been in the conversation for months just makes everything feel inevitable. When the Globes used to throw curve balls all the time, to find a general lack of such is very boring.

      It would have been nice to see Boyhood upset in Best Picture, The Grand Budapest Hotel winning shows that they don’t consider Birdman a comedy (even though they declared it one). The only surprise that I was happy about was How to Train Your Dragon 2 beating everyone else, including Lego. IMO, How to Train was the year’s best animated movie, which made its win a wonderful change to the conversation (but one which won’t carry over to Oscar considering this group’s abysmal track record in that department.

    I called it that “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” would upset “Birdman,” for Best Picture in a Musical or Comedy.
