Nominations were announced by America Ferrera, Chloe Grace Moretz, Angela Bassett, Dennis Quaid. After much waiting and surfing to find the final list (since the Globes website still hasn’t posted the nominations), I finally have a complete list. Below are my comments on the nominations.

Comments on nominations so far: Animated Feature: this seems to be the standard list, but the Academy can easily divert from it. Screenplay: Room makes a surprise showing, but Carol and several other big films have been left out. Did they even see The Hateful Eight? Original Song: these are five of the songs that seem to be appearing in a lot of places. Surprisingly, no Lady Gaga even though she was nominated for Best Actress in a limited series.

Commentary while I wait: Drama Picture: No Hateful Eight. No Creed. No Brooklyn. There was Room for Room, which is surprising. Clearly this little film resonated more than the lack of Spirit Awards attention would have suggested. No Trumbo or The Danish Girl, which might mean they don’t have nearly as much support as previously expected. Comedy Picture: Zero surprises. Director: Tarantino made it in for screenplay, but not director. Otherwise, no real major surprises. Drama Actor: Bryan Cranston again. Is this really a trend or is he riding a wave of support from his Television career? He’s now a more serious contender than we thought. Will Smith got his first mention as well, but there was no Michael B. Jordan, Johnny Depp or Tom Hanks. Bridge of Spies was completely ignored it seems. Drama Actress: This is the set I expected, Globes voters clearly saying that THIS is where Mara and Vikander belong.

More commentary: Comedy/Musical Actor: Two left-field choices, Al Pacino and Mark Ruffalo, kept this from being a fairly bland category. My hunch that Bill Hader wouldn’t be included was correct, but who his replacement was I couldn’t have guessed either of these. The Bradley Cooper omission isn’t surprising. He’s barely been a factor in the race so far and the film has just been screened. I suspect residual love of Jennifer Lawrence is why she and the film are even nominated. Comedy/Musical Actress: I’m not surprised to see Meryl Streep absent and Maggie Smith makes a lot of sense, since she’s part of the Downton Abbey cast and continuously visible to these voters. Supporting Actor: Two names that now move into serious consideration for Oscar that hadn’t been heavily favored before: Paul Dano and Michael Shannon. Dano didn’t show at the SAG nominations, but he’s been mentioned several times recently. Shannon’s one-two punch of SAG and Globes means he’s a serious threat for a nom. Revolutionary Road anyone? Also of note is that no one from Spotlight made this list, here or in supporting actress.

Near-Final commentary: Supporting Actress: With no Mara or Vikander category fraud, the supporting actress race opened up nicely and some solid choices still appeared. Original Score: Sentiment should favor Ennio Morricone who I hadn’t really gigven much consideration to. Steve Jobs, which didn’t seem to have a lot of music in it, is here, which is a touch surprising (to me anyway).
