Leading the nominations, The Shape of Water once again proved more potent than Dunkirk, which picked up no acting nominations and only one tech citation. However, the most notable thing here is the snub of black directors Dee Rees and Jordan Peele and female helmer Greta Gerwig. While there’s one Spanish director in the Best Director list, the rest are white men, including the unexpected inclusion of Ridley Scott who has, for all intents and purposes, been ignored this season. Yes, they gave out some acting nominations to minority actors (Denzel Washington, Daniel Kaluuya, Mary J. Blige, Hong Chau, and Octavia Spencer), the number of minority nominees in other categories speaks volumes (as does the exclusion of Get Out from the screenplay category, one of the places the film has consistently showed up so far during Oscar season). A lot of the Oscar contenders showed up here, but this is probably the biggest sign that Melissa Leo’s Novitiate performance is about to be left off the Oscar ballot when she was thought to be a major contender. This also hinders Tiffany Haddish’s chances, though she could bounce back with the SAG nominations.
