Although they are an organization similar to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) are still a precursor to the big awards (and have been more so in recent years, being the first group to pick Tilda Swinton for a Supporting Actress win). They announce their awards in stages. The first of these, prior to nominations, is what they call The Long List. This is the finalists ballot from which the Nominations are chosen. So, don’t look anywhere outside of this list for information. Below is their introduction to the long list. But, ahead of that, BAFTA has announced their 2009 nominees for Best Film Not in the English Language.

The Long List

The Long List

Over 6000 members of the Academy vote in three rounds to decide the winners of the Orange British Academy Film Awards. The Long List is the result of Round One voting by members of the Academy. With 220 films entered this year, the first round of voting reduces the films down to fifteen in each category. Round Two voting will reduce these fifteen contenders down to the five nominations in each category.

The full list of nominations will be announced on Thursday 21 January at BAFTA Headquarters.
