    And I hope everyone doesn’t hop on this split vote to Picture/Director as a sign that the Oscars will do the same. BAFTA has had several splits in the last decade: 2007 (Atonement/Coens), 2006 (Queen/Paul Greengrass), 2004 (Aviator/Mike Leigh), 2003 (Return of the King/Peter Weir), 2000 (Gladiator/Ang Lee).

    The Academy, by contrast, has only done it twice. 2000 and 2002. Those were also the only times this decade that the DGA hasn’t matched the Oscar winner. And in those cases, BAFTA went with the DGA winner (Ang Lee and Roman Polanski).

      You mean the same people who hopped on the Hooper bandwagon after his surprise DGA win?

      I think The Social Network still has a chance of winning Best Picture at the Oscars, but if even it doesn’t I still see Fincher winning.

        The DGA has a supremely high accuracy rate. The BAFTA? Not even close.

        And while we’re at it. The DGA, even in its years where it disagreed with Oscar, they’ve never disagreed on poor excuses of directorial accomplishment.

        I will continue to predict Tom Hooper for Best Director because I’ve seen no evidence to support a Picture/Director split this year. It’s been 6 years since the last and let us remember that the split is not the norm for the Academy, but the exception. Fincher is no Polanski.

          In less than two weeks we’ll know and all this speculation will become meaningless, but I do have a couple of points I’d like to make.

          The BAFTAs prior to 2002 always came after the Oscars so the 2000 awards are irrelevant for making comparisons here.

          The Polanski win is important because both BAFTA and AMPAS decided to give their award to a director with a track record rather than a neophyte film director. Rob Marshall, like Tom Hooper, had been best known in Hollywood for his TV work – 1999’s Annie as well as his Broadway work so he was not a neophyte in terms of directing, but was in terms of major film work. The same can be said of Hooper whose The Damned United was a good, but minor film.

          The last time BAFTA gave their Best Picture award to a British film, Atonement, they gave their best director award to Hollywood’s Coen Brothers for No Country for Old Men. This year’s split is along those same lines. It’s the DGA’s award that is out of whack with the general consensus, not BAFTA’s which makes Fincher the most likely Oscar recipient regardless of what organization has the greatest track record.

          And while it shouldn’t have anything to do with the outcome, has anyone noticed how eerily alike Marshall and Hooper look?

            But the question is. When would you consider the DGA to have been out of whack with the consensus?

            There are three cases where I would consider DGA to be out of sync with the other critics groups. Anthony Minghella in 1996, Ron Howard in 2001 and Rob Marshall in 2002. In two of those cases, the director won the Oscar.

            And when you reference Polanski, you need to also mention that the BAFTA’s chose The Pianist for Best Picture that year, so obviously his win was more in line with the general sentiment for the film, not just for the director.

            For every statistic, there is an opposing statistic, but you have to admit that you are a bit biased in hoping that David Fincher will still win over Hooper, afraid that DGA’s record will stay intact. I’m there with you. I don’t want Hooper to win, but I think there is more statistical evidence to point to a Hooper win than a Fincher win. But, I’ll be happy to be wrong if Hooper does lose. Every time I place my bet on personal opinion, I get stung.

            I didn’t want to see a Brokeback Mountain loss, but just look at the lack of editing nomination and you have the most startling sign that it was going to happen. I had hoped Heath Ledger could beat out Philip Seymour Hoffman. Didn’t happen. When I let my personal opinion force me to push for a given outcome, it usually turns out poorly, though my fierce dedication to Amy Ryan’s loss was vindicated, but that was more an instinct thing than an emotional gesture.

      Correction, in 2005 Ang Lee won the director’s oscar for brokeback mountain while crash won for best picture..

      And you are right, a picture/director split is a rare ocassion, but I’m confident this year is one of those.

      Fincher has had another nomination and he’s very respected. Hooper is too new in the bussiness, it is far more rare seeing a new director win the oscar, the only time I remember this in recent years was Sam Mendes for American Beauty. So I think hooper has a small chance.

        Sorry. I did miss that…I guess I keep putting Crash out of my mind as a winner. Though, BAFTA also that year went with the DGA winner.

        As for Hooper, he’s not really new in the business. He has three Emmy nominations, including a win for directing Elizabeth I. He started on TV in the ’90s including critically acclaimed miniseries like Elizabeth I, Longford and John Adams. And he also directed 2009’s The Damned United along with 2004’s Red Dust.

        Sam Mendes, on the other hand had only directed two stage musicals on the small screen and, I believe, they were both (Cabaret and Company) filmed performances of stage productions. And today, the longform programs on television are often more accomplished than the big screen offerings and considering how frequently big screen names appear in small screen efforts these days, it’s no surprise Hooper’s faring well. I mean, Hooper’s directed the likes of Helen Mirren, Toby Jones, Jeremy Irons, Jim Broadbent, Samantha Morton, Paul Giamatti, Laura Linney, Tom Wilkinson, so I wouldn’t really classify him as a neophyte.

          Yeah, I hadn’t check on Hooper that well. You’re right Wesley, Hooper has a chance, though Finch is still my frontrunner.

          And I also keep putting Crash out of my mind as a winner, what a lame oscar winner in decades.

            See, what I don’t think people are understanding is that I’m not predicting Hooper to win because I want him to…I don’t want him to. I think The King’s Speech is less a director’s piece and more an actor’s piece. It has no language. It feels like a TV movie. I hope that anyone else wins. But I can’t look at history and not come to the conclusion that Hooper is the frontrunner now. As much as it makes me blanche to think about Hooper winning over Fincher, Aronofsky, Russell or even the Coens (whom I don’t care much for), I can’t help but see writing on the wall and it’s in comic sans font.

            Wesley, maybe when you make your predictions you should make your personal picks.

            I understand there is a big difference between predicting and wanting.

            I “wanted” a tie between Fincher and Nolan, so I have no choice but to “want” fincher to take the award.

    No many surprises.

    Each year if by any chance there comes a british movie that’s an international success, then it wins as many bafta awards as they can give it. Geoffrey Rush I can undertstand, but Helena Boham Carter?, come on brits, be fair.

    The awards beside supporting actor and actress are very much the popular prediction at this year’s academy awards.

      I believe Helena won a career award as much as a performance award. The same could happen at the Oscars if it is a King’s Speech sweep.
