Predictions Commentary

Wesley Lovell
American Society of Cinematographers: While many other precursors often point the way, this one sometimes goes out of the way to not pick the eventual winner. So, while I think The Hurt Locker is still a strong contender for both, you could see it or Avatar win here (or even Inglourious Basterds) and someone else win at the Oscars. Even The White Ribbon could win here without a prayer at the Oscars, but the only time this group has picked a foreign film was A Very Long Engagement 5 years ago.
Cinema Audio Society: For a time, this group hit Oscar 100% of the time. However, with 6 misses in the last 10 years, this may not be as accurate a predictor as we think. So, it’s entirely possible that The Hurt Locker wins CAS and then loses the Oscar to Avatar.

Tripp Burton
American Society of CInematographers: I don’t know how much cinematographers will warm up to Avatar when so much of their job was done by computers and special effects artists. The work on The Hurt Locker is simple yet effective, and should take the award here.
Cinema Audio Society: Creating a brand-new world with sound would seem to be the hardest job here, so look for Avatar to win over the realistic The Hurt Locker. Those alien sounds from District 9 were impressive and original, so look for that to play spoiler here.
