Predictions Commentary

Wesley Lovell
Period Costume Design: This is one of the Oscar frontrunners and is obviously well liked. I could also see both Coco Before Chanel and Sherlock Holmes taking the prize.
Fantasy Costume Design: Star Trek has very few elaborate costumes, but Imaginarium does, so I give the edge to Terry Gilliam.
Contemporary Costume Design: I could see this going to Crazy Heart, Precious or Up in the Air. I pick Up in the Air because it’s more sophisticated. The simple elegance of the work in Jason Reitman’s film is more reminiscent of Edith Head’s designs that so regularly won and were nominated at the Oscars than any of the others. And while I’m sure this group appreciates the dingy and authentic look of the other two films, Up in the Air is also authentic even if it is more polished.
