Received two screeners today: Mud and Stories We Tell. I expect there may be more coming from Lionsgate later in the season.
Mud
Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland, Sam Shepard, Ray McKinnon, Sarah Paulson, Michael Shannon, Joe Don Baker Director: Jeff Nichols Premise: From IMDb: “Two young boys encounter a fugitive and form a pact to help him evade the bounty hunters on his trail and to reunite him with his true love.” Oscar Chances: Uncertain: Typically, the first screeners out of the gate result in heavy Oscar consideration, but the film Mud was thought to be Matthew McConaughey’s potential Oscar vehicle when first released; however, both Dallas Buyers Club and Wolf of Wall Street have more potential Rotten Tomatoes: 98% (158 critics; as of 10/7/13) Metacritic: 76 out of 100 (35 critics; as of 10/7/13)
Stories We Tell
Director: Sarah Polley Premise: From IMDb: “A film that excavates layers of myth and memory to find the elusive truth at the core of a family of storytellers” Oscar Chances: Uncertain: It’s one of the most widely acclaimed documentaries of the year, but the Academy hasn’t shown a lot of love for Sarah Polley recently. Still, a groundswell of support and early accessibility through screener might help it find a spot. Rotten Tomatoes: 95% (105 critics; as of 10/7/13) Metacritic: 90 out of 100 (35 critics; as of 10/7/13)

“Mud” is good, not great; solid performances (and an especially great performance by Sam Shepard) are undermined by a predictable, pedestrian screenplay. “Stories We Tell” is one of my least favorite films of the year; I’ve adored Sarah Polley’s previous films, but this one is oh-so-precious and horribly filmed (some of the worst use of Extra Nauseating Super Shaky Cam™ I’ve ever seen).
