What a refreshing, thoughtful, bold, emotional, nostalgic film! I agree with Wesley, I may not have discovered this on my own, but thankfully it was chosen as the film of the month.
This is one of those terrific little gems that I never would have discovered on my own. Thanks to the UAADB and the champions the film had there, I sought it out when I could find it available through Netflix. It is a marvelous film and that ending isn’t terribly obvious, but makes not only significant sense, but wraps up the whole delightful film wonderfully.
C.R.A.Z.Y. is a 2005 French Candadian film that swept the Genies (Canadian Oscars) and Jutra Awards (French Canadian Oscars), but despite world-wide acclaim, went straight to DVD in the U.S. in 2006.
It’s a very intense family relationship drama about five brothers, all of whom are different, growing up in the 1960s and 70s with the emphaisis on the fourth son, who is either gay or bisexual. The performances are excellent, but what really makes the film unique is its ecclectic use of music from The Rolling Stones to David Bowie to Charles Aznavour to Patsy Cline whose “Crazy” is played over and over at key moments in the film.
The title has several meanings – the song, of course; the craziness of life, and one other, very special meaning that isn’t revealed until the closing credits, but you can figure it out if you’ve been paying attention or say to yourself, “of course” if you haven’t.
Highly recommneded.
