Wesley Lovell: After the win at CAS and the prior win at BAFTA, I’m now leaning towards The Revenant picking up this award even if unfairly. Before I changed this category (and sound editing), Mad Max was coming out on top of the Oscar tally board, now it falls beneath The Revenant, which seems to be the trajectory of this race.
Peter J. Patrick: Which is the loudest?
Tripp Burton: At this point, it is looking more and more like Mad Max will be dominating the tech awards, especially down the ballot, and the sound awards should be no different.
Thomas La Tourrette: This felt for so long like it would be Mad Max’s to lose, but it now looks like that will happen. When the Cinema Audio Society awarded their prize to The Revenant, it showed that film as having stronger support in the tech categories than previously thought. The spare sound work of Revenant is well done, but Mad Max would have been a more deserving winner. If Revenant prevails here, look for it to not sweep the Oscars but to at least take home a lot more than originally expected.

Wesley Lovell: We won’t know the winners of the Motion Picture Sound Editors awards until Saturday. By that point, it will be too late. However, as often as Production Design and Costume Design go in tandem, so too do the two sound awards. As such, I’m giving the edge to The Revenant over Mad Max: Fury Road.
Peter J. Patrick: Loudness impresses here.
Tripp Burton: At this point, it is looking more and more like Mad Max will be dominating the tech awards, especially down the ballot, and the sound awards should be no different.
Thomas La Tourrette: This feels like it should be an easy win for Star Wars or Mad Max, but with so many awards going to The Revenant, I now think that it will win here as well.
