Wesley Lovell: This will probably be the shortest rundown I write. Coco wins. There is no competition and if there is (there isn’t), it will be from Annie Award winner The Breadwinner.
Peter J. Patrick: The popularity of the heavily sentimental Pixar film, Coco, should prevail over the beautifully drawn and detailed Loving Vincent, which is the only nominee I can see pulling an upset.
Tripp Burton: Coco won ten awards at the Annie Awards last weekend, and with a combination of critical praise, box office success, political meaning, and audience belovedness, I can’t see voters not giving it this award.
Thomas La Tourrette: Coco is going to win. There really is no debate about it. There often has been a dominant film that seems likely to win this award, but this year there just is no doubt about what will win. It was, perhaps, a somewhat weak year for animated films to start with, so Coco was the favorite long before it opened. Then it opened to good reviews. It is a colorful, family-centric film, though not in the top tier of Disney/Pixar films. No other film comes close in capturing its magic. Or the love it has received so far, Coco has 32 precursor awards and the only other nominee that has any, The Breadwinner, has 3. The Breadwinner will have to be content with its nomination, as I see no way it will win. Loving Vincent boasts amazing graphics with its fully oil painted animation. The story lets it down a bit, being a bit CSI: Vincent as one reviewer referred to it. Neither The Boss Baby nor Ferdinand will stand a chance. Coco wins easily.
