For our eleventh Rundown article, we tackle two frequently-linked categories that are most responsible for setting us into the place and look of a period. After the jump, you’ll find our winner and runner-up predictions for Best Production Design & Best Costume Design as well as general commentary about the race. Thursday, it’s the supporting performers.

Wesley Lovell: At this point, Elvis is still a threat for a win, but Babylon has easily been dominating this category and unless people refuse to watch the film (or hate it), All Quiet on the Western Front has the larger sets and could be the unlikely victor.
Peter J. Patrick: The detailed production design of All Quiet on the Western Front should take this with Babylon the second most deserving, but they do love their Elvis so who knows.
Tripp Burton: No updated predictions or commentary provided.
Thomas La Tourrette: I had figured this was solely between Babylon and Elvis until All Quiet on the Western Front won the BAFTA. I still think it is between the first two, but that is not as clear as it once was. Only Avatar and The Fabelmans seem unlikely to win. All Quiet created a tangible feeling of the desolation of the trenches during WWI, but I am not certain if that will be enough to win. Even at the BAFTAs, which gave all sorts of awards to All Quiet on the Western Front, Babylon still won this award. Elvis has lavish sets, but they are all based in reality which may hurt its chances to win. In a sense Babylonโ€™s were too, but they created so many different styles and time periods which should help it win. I think the world of the silent and talking soundstages, tunnels, and grand mansions of early Hollywood will propel Babylon to a win.

Best Costume Design

Winner Predictions

  • Babylon (TB O)
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (PP O)
  • Elvis (WL O) (TL O)
  • Everything Everywhre All at Once
  • Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris

Runner-Up Predictions

  • Babylon (PP R) [New]
  • Elvis (TB O)
  • Everything Everywhre All at Once (WL R) [New] (TL R) [New]

(color and symbol key at bottom of page)

Wesley Lovell: While I think it’s still possible for Black Panther to takes this prize, the wins at the Costume Designers Guild suggest that it’s Elvis in the lead and Everything Everywhere All at Once is the runner-up.
Peter J. Patrick: The eye-popping costume designs of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever deserves to win on merit with Babylon its closest runner-up but they do love their Elvis, so again, who knows.
Tripp Burton: No updated predictions or commentary provided.
Thomas La Tourrette: With its win from the Costume Designers Guild, Elvis has set itself up as the frontrunner. The winner of their period film award has almost always gone on to win the Oscar and this year is looking like no exception. Most prognosticators were expecting the Oscar to go to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but I do not think a sequel has ever won this award. It has the most precursors, but it did not even win the Sci-Fi/Fantasy award this year. The original Black Panther won that and then went on to win the Oscar, but this one is increasingly unlikely to. Elvis will get competition from Fantasy winner Everything Everywhere All at Once and from the plethora of costumes from Babylon and the fashion house designs of Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, but none of them look likely to prevail. Elvis, with the BAFTA and guild awards, is the one to beat.
