Wesley Lovell: XXXX

Peter J. Patrick: This category very often produces an upset and I think this will be one of those years. The elegant modern designs of I Am Love, set in Milan, are not only the most deserving, but after Sandy Powell’s tongue lashing last year about period costumes always winning, it’s about time something new won.

Tripp Burton: Best Picture frontrunners have traditionally done very well in this category, even if in the past few years it has gone to more minor films with flashy costumes. A win for The King’s Speech could prove that something of a sweep is going to occur for the film, but it could also prove that there just wasn’t a lot of great competition for the film. I Am Love and The Tempest are both little seen, Alice in Wonderland is a film that people seemed to actually like and films like True Grit, where the costumes are not meant to be pretty, tend not to do well with the Academy.
