A very slow Thursday. One new trailer for indie comedy Tamara Drewe and a new poster for yesterday’s preview The Freebie. There was a new trailer posted for Mesrine, a two-part film which I reviewed previously under its Part I title. Since the trailer is identical, I will not be reviewing it separately.

TAMARA DREWE

Plot Summary: In a countryside village where writers come to get away from the world and write, a distraction in the form of a beautiful young woman appears to give their lives a much needed jolt.
Release Date: October 8, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B+
Commentary: There’s something intriguing buried within this trailer. It’s not an overzealous, overexpressive or oversensitive preview that doesn’t try to be more than it is, which appears to be a charming little comic farce that could be quite entertaining. A few demerits for the comic book-style location changing narratives from scene to scene and for not being something that will appeal to very many audiences.
Rating: C
Commentary: I don’t like the poster nearly as much as the trailer. It’s such a generic entity that it shows a complete lack of genuine creativity, unlike the trailer. No stylish elements, no clever rejoinders, no enticing imagery. It all just sits there without emphasis or excitement.

Oscar Chances: A lot depends on how its received by critics at the end of the year. I doubt that much will be in contention, but a screenwriting nomination is possible if it’s good.

THE FREEBIE, poster

Plot Summary: Trying to cope with his life as a married man, Darren hopes to convince his wife Annie to permit him to have an extra-marital affair to certify his love for her.
Release Date: August 27, 2010

The Freebie
Rating: C-
Commentary: The holding hands with a potential extra-marital suitor concept isn’t terribly original, though it’s the most inventive thing about this poster which doesn’t really exhibit any comparative thematic styles with the trailer, seeming to feel out of place entirely with its fellow publicity entity.
