A giant update today with no fewer than eight new trailers and a single new poster (Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader). The new trailers are for: A Mother’s Courage, Heartbreaker, Holy Wars, Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo, Peepli Live, La Soga, Colin Fitz Lives! and Battle.

A MOTHER’S COURAGE

Plot Summary: A documentary about several families living and coping with autistic children and searching for answers.
Release Date: September 24, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B+
Commentary: An effective trailer conveying the sorrow and hope of parents of autistic kids. The trailer won’t draw people to the theater in droves, but it should bring those who are most interested in the subject.
Rating: C
Commentary: There really isn’t much to this poster. It’s overly simplified, inelegant and lacks that visual draw that makes a successful poster.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: Could be a nomination contender.

HEARTBREAKER

Plot Summary: A father desperate to end his daughter’s engagement hires a professional heartbreaker to come between them, but ends up falling in love with her himself.
Release Date: September 10, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B
Commentary: It’s an interesting concept, which should carry it a long way. That it’s in a foreign language is a detriment for most people, but should work well with foreign lingo-savvy audiences.
Rating: None
Commentary: No poster available for review.
Trailer Link: Yahoo Movies Trailers
Oscar Chances: Probably not. Comedy in the foreign language competition doesn’t often work, so I doubt France would submit the film if it’s even eligible.

HOLY WARS

Plot Summary: Two sides of extremism in this documentary about the war between Islam and Christianity.
Release Date: July 30, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B
Commentary: As this trailer states, this documentary is sure to push your buttons. Most people who see this film will support one side or the other. Hopefully, there will be enough in between to point out just how wrong both sides in this “war” are.
Rating: D+
Commentary: Unnecessarily minimal. The poster does little to convey its purpose outside of the written word, which isn’t sufficient for most audiences.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: Far too controversial for Oscar.

SWEETHEARTS OF THE PRISON RODEO

Plot Summary: Prison inmates find release as participants in a high-danger rodeo.
Release Date: September 17, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: If you don’t have some kind of visceral reaction to this trailer, you probably won’t enjoy this type of documentary. It may well prove popular in some circles drawing people who wouldn’t normally visit a documentary.
Rating: B-
Commentary: It’s a little too busy, but is reminiscent of many older rodeo advertisements, which helps convey the doc’s setting.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: None.

PEEPLI LIVE

Plot Summary: In order to save the family farm, a man decides to kill himself in order to get the government to award his family enough money to save it.
Release Date: August 13, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: It’s certainly an interesting concept and that it’s based on actual events says a lot about the subject. That it’s a comedic film is a bit strange, but it could still provide plenty of social commentary.
Rating: C-
Commentary: I’m noticing a lot of purple in the posters for Bollywood pics. I’m not sure why, but I don’t particularly care for the color selection here. And that it’s so ordinary otherwise does not help.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: None.

LA SOGA

Plot Summary: While attempting to avenge his father’s murder, a cop finds himself accused of crimes he did not commit and goes on a search to discover the truth.
Release Date: August 13, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C
Commentary: Nothing in this trailer, short of the critic notices, makes this seem like anything more than your standard crime drama.
Rating: C+
Commentary: The poster is too simplistic and colorless to allow for the colorful reflected flag. It’s as if they are trying too hard to capitalize on the flag symbolism while suggesting little patriotism in the trailer.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: It’s doubtful, but any foreign crime drama becomes a threat in the right distributor’s hands.

COLIN FITZ LIVES!

Plot Summary: Tasked with guarding the grave of a popular musician, three cops must deal with the bizarre fans that want to celebrate the fifth anniversary of his death.
Release Date: August 4, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C-
Commentary: What a terrible trailer. Focusing too heavily on the “cult” potential of the trailer, producers are hoping to develop a following before the film hits the theaters. Unfortunately for them, cult followings don’t typically begin like that.
Rating: C-
Commentary: Although I applaud the artists for trying to be original in how they display the cast for the film, the end result is fairly tacky.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: None.

BATTLE

Plot Summary: Facing financial aid debt, a student enters himself in a beat competition in hopes of winning the prize money that will pay off his debt.
Release Date: October 22, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C-
Commentary: For being a film about hip hop and beat battles, the music choice seems unusually impotent. The acting presented in the trailer doesn’t give one hope of a good film, nor does the utterly unoriginal.
Rating: B-
Commentary: I don’t know that the artist wanted to make this seem like a movie about villainy, but that’s what the poster ends up suggesting, even though it is done quite well.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: None.

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER, poster #2

Plot Summary: The third film in The Chronicles of Narnia series finds the kids returning to Narnia to help save the kingdom once more, this time upon the royal ship The Dawn Treader.
Release Date: December 10, 2010

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Rating: B
Commentary: The Dawn Treader is an appropriate choice for the poster and certainly better than the awful Aslan/rat image on the first poster.;
