HOWL

Plot Summary: The film follows the life and trial of Allen Ginsberg, one of the most important obscenity trials to date. Release Date: September 24, 2010 |

Rating: B- Commentary: What I like most about the trailer is also what bothers me with it. The trailer, through use of typewriter, dialogue and sound manages to create a rhythm and pace to go along with the poem being recited in part. That’s the aspect of the trailer I like, but it never really has a climax of emotion that would sell it to a wider audience. It’s a niche trailer applied towards a niche audience, which should help with the Beat Generation enthusiasts and fans of Allen Ginsburg, but that may be as far as it goes. |
Rating: B+ Commentary: I like the classicism of the poster, the sparse, yet expressive nature. It feels like a poster that would have come out at the time Ginsberg’s obscenity trial took place, which is its biggest asset. |

Trailer Link: Apple Trailers Oscar Chances: Depending on how it’s received by critics and limited release audiences will determine its Oscar potential, but it could have a chance, especially for actor James Franco who seems to blend into the character…and that’s just the impression I get from the trailer. |

Rating: B+ Commentary: I know I complain about other trailers being overly abusive of art design, but sometimes it works better than I imagined. Using only still images and dialogue from the film, the trailer manages to create a sense of tension and borrows heavily on the artistic motifs that sometimes accompanied Hitchcock thrillers. It’s a surprisingly good trailer for being what it is. |
Rating: #2 – C Commentary: An exasperating change from the lovely, simple poster from before (conspicuously missing again, but thankfully located and will be replaced as soon as possible). The Hitchcockian theme just doesn’t seem to fit the genre in my mind, but maybe the new trailer will support the design. Rating: #3 – B Commentary: Like the first poster, but still lacking the simplicity, this one is much larger on the buried man, but is notably missing a viable visage. So, is Ryan Reynolds not a popular selling point? Or are audiences more interested in looking at a scratched-up image reminiscent of the Saw films? |

Rating: B Commentary: Although the closing shot of the trailer is coldly calculating, it’s fairly effective in expressing just how visual effects heavy this film is and, even though the trailer doesn’t talk about the 3D aspect, this trailer does a fairly good job of capitalizing on what could be possible if it were in 3D (and if I were seeing it before a 3D movie, I might have seen it in 3D). So, fairly effective and should help promote strong business. |

Rating: C- Commentary: It’s a disjointed trailer with excessive art design trying to make it look colorful and expressive. The plot isn’t terribly great, the music is ill-fitting and the sound is poorly mixed. |
Rating: C+ Commentary: The colors aren’t your run-of-the-mill variety, but the design itself isn’t terribly inventive. The actors will sell the film itself if audiences are familiar with them, but that won’t be very many. |

Trailer Link: Apple Trailers Oscar Chances: Bollywood isn’t an Academy mainstay and romantic comedies are definitely not in with them. |
