We have two new trailers (Sucker Punch and Soul Kitchen) today and two new posters (Never Let Me Go and Resident Evil: Afterlife).
SUCKER PUNCH
|
Plot Summary: Taken to a home for the criminally insane, a young woman fights to escape her prison using the very tools they have taught her. Release Date: March 25, 2011 |

Rating: B+ Commentary: Despite knowing that the film is going to be borderline mediocre, Zach Snyder’s films have lush visuals that many other filmmakers should hope to emulate. Now, if only he could balance plot and performance with spectacle and he might become a better filmmaker. |
Rating: B+ (All) Commentary: Each poster is designed similarly, but with vastly different backgrounds and slight tinges of color. These will do exactly what the producers want: seduce teens and young men, sell batches of posters, and draw people to the theater. |

SOUL KITCHEN
|
Plot Summary: Trying to find a way to turn around his life and his struggling restaurant, a restaurateur finds himself partnered with a talented chef and bringing about all the changes he had long desired. Release Date: August 20, 2010 |

Rating: C+ Commentary: It could be good, but it could also be terrible. The idea isn’t too far fetched and the scenes presented suggest at least a passing interest in character development. |
Rating: C Commentary: Sitting around a table does not equate itself with a restaurant…especially when the scene looks more like a small studio apartment dining area. |

Rating: B Commentary: I like the design of the poster, the colors and the image, but the fact that it doesn’t seem to fit with the trailer makes me wonder how much the artists really know about the film. |

RESIDENT EVIL, poster #2

Rating: C+ Commentary: A far better output than the first poster I reviewed. This one uses color more effectively, looks more consistent with the concept of 3D as a medium and uses the space of the frame well. Even the glassy reflection of whom I can only assume is the film’s antagonist is a good selection. Now, it’s still not a great masterwork of art (the title’s a bit too disjointed and ill-fitting and the use of that particular image of Milla Jovovish is poor), it’s sufficient to draw in the desired audience. |
