In a world where Lee Daniels and Harvey Weinstein play the Oscar game.

Lee Daniels’ The Butler, trailer #2, poster #2

Plot Summary: From IMDb: “A look at the life of Cecil Gaines who served eight presidents as the White House’s head butler from 1952 to 1986, and had a unique front-row seat as political and racial history was made.”
Release Date: August 16, 2013

Rating: A
Commentary: For years I’ve been lamenting the sorry state of poster design. Each new poster borrows heavily and unoriginally from the past. In the span of one week, I’ve come across two designs of merit. The first was Saving Mr. Banks and the second was this. The flag-infused silhoutte of a black butler is inventive and visually compelling even if the rest of the design is sparse.
Rating: B+
Commentary: Little has changed between the two trailers, though we finally get to see Alan Rickman as Reagan and he looks pretty good. Still, the film looks like it might belong to James Marsden in terms of presidential impressiveness even if that’s not entirely what the film is about. The premise may be about the parallels between the denizens of the White House and the world outside, but it will live and breathe off the veracity of the performances of each of the prominent public figures on display.

Oscar Chances: This will become the most over-hyped film of the year even if it is a masterpiece, which is unlikely. Consider it a lock for a nomination in Best Picture with several other top-tier Oscar nominations to go with it. Wins will depend on how good the film really is.
