Today was almost an all-poster day, but two last-minute trailer additions kept it from being that. The new trailers are for The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Trader and Red Riding Hood. The posters are for Black Swan, Cars 2, Made in Dagenham, The Rite and The Roommate.

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER, trailer #2

Plot Summary: The third film in The Chronicles of Narnia series finds the kids returning to Narnia to help save the kingdom once more, this time upon the royal ship The Dawn Treader.
Release Date: December 10, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B
Commentary: It’s one heck of a new trailer. Although the Biblical allegory is getting a bit heavy-handed, the design elements are quite impressive, but I am certain this film does not need to be seen in 3D. Matter of fact, if I have to see one more film where someone throws a scroll towards the camera to unravel it, I think I’m going to scream.

RED RIDING HOOD

Plot Summary: An expansion of the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood brought to the screen by director Catherine Hardwicke.
Release Date: March 11, 2011

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B
Commentary: It’s not a bad little teaser. There are a few painful moments in it and I’m fairly certain I already know who the wolf is, but it has atmosphere and strong design elements, which might make it entertaining enough.
Rating: B-
Commentary: It conjures up the film’s premise fairly well, though it’s a bit too limited in scope and design.

Oscar Chances: Since it’s geared toward the Twilight crowd mostly, I doubt the Academy will take it that seriously, but tech nominations aren’t completely out of the question.

CARS 2, poster

Plot Summary: The sequel to Pixar’s automotive hit takes Mater and Lightning McQueen across the pond and embroils them in international espionage.
Release Date: June 24, 2011

Cars 2
Rating: B
Commentary: I’ll give the poster a little leeway because I don’t know how international the film will be, but from the trailer, it only looks like an England-based adventure, which would suggest that it’s not as international as the poster lets on, but perhaps it is a genuine spy-ish film with exotic locales.

BLACK SWAN, poster #6

Plot Summary: Struggling to become Prima Ballerina in the New York City Ballet Company, Nina must move beyond the role of White Swan in Swan Lake and learn how to embrace her Black Swan without being consumed by it.
Release Date: December 3, 2010

Black Swan
Rating: C+
Commentary: It’s not as inventive as the prior quartet of posters, but it’s not an abysmal design either. However, they would probably be best served with a different, more interesting design.

THE RITE, poster

Plot Summary: A skeptical Catholic priest is brought into the world of exorcism to discover there’s more truth there than he ever expected.
Release Date: January 28, 2011

The Rite
Rating: C+
Commentary: It’s been a long time since Anthony Hopkins was a selling point for a film. He has been unable to open a strong box office hit in years. So, why do they choose to make his face the central image for the film? It’s exceedingly large and blown up to theater wall sizes would be terrifying, but not for the reasons the makers would hope.

THE ROOMMATE, poster

Plot Summary: A college roommate turns into a psychotic, overprotective killer when anyone tries to interrupt her new friendship.
Release Date: February 4, 2011

The Roommate
Rating: C
Commentary: If they wanted to have her stand out in a crowd, they should have done something a little different than to blur everyone else. It’s not that attractive a poster and no one will know what it’s even for.

MADE IN DAGENHAM, poster #2

Plot Summary: In a small all-woman sewing factory, a British woman starts a movement in the country pushing for equal pay.
Release Date: November 19, 2010

Made in Dagenham
Rating: C-
Commentary: If you had never heard of the film or seen the trailer, you might think this was some sort of fashion film about a designer of some kind. While a seamstress in a sweatshop is not exactly fashion, it has some connection. However, the poster’s so dry otherwise that it almost becomes pointless.
