Tonight, we wrap things up with our biggest update of the week. Six new trailers (Beneath the Dark, Hall Pass, Just Go With It, Navidad S.A., Regresa and Zookeeper) and six new posters (Never Let Me Go (#5), Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, Tron Legacy (a triptych composed of posters #3, #4 & #5) and Yogi Bear (#2)).

NAVIDAD S.A.

Plot Summary: As children cease believing in Santa Claus, the north pole’s temperature rises. Santa must embark on a journey to save his flooding home from destruction by disbelief.
Release Date: October 29, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B+
Commentary: What a clever little concept this one is. Although I can see the potential for abuse of cinematic style, it could well be one of the more entertaining holiday films coming out this year.
Rating: C
Commentary: It’s a hodge podge of images designed to accentuate the plot, but without really engaging the viewer.

Oscar Chances: None.

REGRESA

Plot Summary: Hoping to find out why her relationship is slipping, a young woman goes through hypnotic regression and falls into a mental trap believing herself to be an ancient princess looking for her prince. Her husband, realizing who he has loss, tries to find a way to bring her back.
Release Date: October 29, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B
Commentary: While not as mesmerizing as the trailer for Navidad S.A., Regresa is another intriguing concept that looks like it could be the type of romantic drama that American audiences would enjoy even in a foreign language.
Rating: C+
Commentary: A little better training in poster arts and 24 Frames could be a major powerhouse. But this one is fairly uneventful despite evoking much of the plot of the film.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: None.

BENEATH THE DARK

Plot Summary: Stopped in a deserted motel in the Mojave desert on their way to a wedding, a young couple’s relationship is tested when a mysterious stranger attempts to pull a confession out of the man with a past he doesn’t want to remember.
Release Date: November 5, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: It’s a potentially interesting twist on the B-movie, motel horror staple, but where it’s headed is a bit unclear from the trailer. It almost seems to be a strange kind of Hitcher/Identity/Psycho/Eyes Wide Shut combination.
Rating: C-
Commentary: A bit too dark and mysterious and vacant to be very enticing. We’re not talking the Bates Motel here.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: None.

JUST GO WITH IT

Plot Summary: A lecherous bachelor who uses a wedding band to get hook-ups finds the woman he could spend the rest of his life with, only he has to pretend to be married and working on a divorce in order to keep her.
Release Date: February 11, 2011

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C+
Commentary: This Adam Sandler film doesn’t look like the standard Sandler film, which is the only reason this rating isn’t lower. There are a couple of funny moments in the trailer, but it still isn’t a film I would break my no-Sandler rule in order to watch (that film would be Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love and I still haven’t seen that).
Rating: None
Commentary: I don’t review placeholders.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: None.

HALL PASS

Plot Summary: Two sex-crazed husbands are given a one week reprieve from marriage to do whatever they want without consequence in an effort to show them that marriage is better than freedom.
Release Date: February 25, 2011

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C-
Commentary: The Farrelly Brothers have only had one major achievement: There’s Something About Mary. Everything else has been unwatchable. This one doesn’t look too far off those low-water mark.
Rating: C
Commentary: If it weren’t for the looks of conquer standing over the woman trying to sunbathe, the poster would be an absolute waste. And even with that, it’s not all that great.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: None.

ZOOKEEPER

Plot Summary: A lovelorn zookeeper learns the rules of courtship from a group of zoo animals intent on keeping him from leaving.
Release Date: July 8, 2011

Trailer

Poster

Rating: D+
Commentary: Stale humor. Unengaging concept. This combo re-tread of Madagascar/The Wild mixed with a concept similar to Night at the Museum done in an attempt to re-ignite the latter’s huge success is about as must see as a freshly-painted wall.
Rating: D-
Commentary: It would seem like a generic placeholder, but it has a tagline, so it must be considered an actual advertising tool, which it utterly fails at being.

Oscar Chances: None.

TRON LEGACY, posters #3, #4, #5

Plot Summary: A re-envisioning of the legendary ’80s virtual reality film Tron.
Release Date: December 17, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
Tron Legacy
Rating: B (All 3)
Commentary: Although it may not look like it below (some browsers won’t show a space between the posters), this is actually a set of three posters designed to be displayed side-by-side. The colors are quite vivid despite being relatively limited, though it makes me wonder if we’re looking at the battle of the Jeff Bridgeses…the image on the left looks like a younger Bridges while the one on the right is an obvious older Bridges. Seeing the film may be the only way to know for certain.

RARE EXPORTS: A CHRISTMAS TALE, poster

Plot Summary: A mining operation uncovers the secret lair of Santa Claus, only he’s not the benevolent grandfather figure everyone expects.
Release Date: December 3, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale
Rating: B-
Commentary: I’m not in love with the hand-drawn copy of a real image concept. It just doesn’t seem to stand out nearly as well as it should, though it works well enough to perhaps get a few interested people in who haven’t seen the trailer or heard of the film.

NEVER LET ME GO, poster #5

Plot Summary: Three English school children grow into adults and find feelings of love emerging despite a grim reality that waits ahead for them.
Release Date: October 1, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
Never Let Me Go
Rating: C+
Commentary: While it works in trying to show stars people might want to see, it’s not a very inventive or notable poster.

YOGI BEAR, poster #2

Plot Summary: A live-action/cgi hybrid adaptation of the classic cartoon about a talking bear and his young cub cohort who steal picnic baskets from unsuspecting campers.
Release Date: December 17, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
Yogi Bear
Rating: C-
Commentary: Excessive content paired with little rational connection to real nature will possibly confuse audiences who haven’t seen the trailer, which will be limited.
