My apologies for the delay, but there was too much to update on Friday for me before I headed out for the night. So here is the belated Friday update of Trailer Watch. Four new trailers (The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, Ip Man and Paranormal Activity 2 (#2)) and three new posters (Harry Potter (#5), The Tourist and True Grit)

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, trailer #2

Plot Summary: The sequel to the popular supernatural horror flick about the paranormal events that can be recorded from one stationary camera. Here, the plan seems to be to use more cameras.
Release Date: October 22, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: A definite improvement over the first trailer, this one really targets parents and those who fear for the safety of children. It’s not as spine-tingly interesting as the first film’s trailer, but it may do better at pulling back the audience that made the first a hit.
Rating: None
Commentary: I don’t review placeholders.

THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET’S NEST

Plot Summary: The final film in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy.
Release Date: October 29, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: The announcer doesn’t feel quite right for the trailer, but the action presented, which doesn’t give anything away, but teases the audience well enough to make it at least as big a success as the first two features.
Rating: None
Commentary: None available

Oscar Chances: None.

GUY AND MADELINE ON A PARK BENCH

Plot Summary: A jazz musical about a love-stricken young woman and the man whom she met on a park bench.
Release Date: November 5, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C
Commentary: The constant flashes of one-word praise gets monotonous fairly quick and unlike a lot of other trailers featuring jazz music, this one just doesn’t lift my spirits.
Rating: C-
Commentary: The trumpet is a suitable expression of the film’s jazz themes, but the excessive amount of text across a white background isn’t particularly attractive and most people aren’t going to stop to watch a film with that kind of title, especially if it doesn’t look very interesting.

Oscar Chances: None.

IP MAN

Plot Summary: A legendary Chinese martial artist, oppressed by invading Japanese forces stands up to protect himself, his family and his country.
Release Date: October 1, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C-
Commentary: Two hours of martial arts with something of a plot tied in. Where’s Zhang Yimou when you need him?
Rating: B
Commentary: A boring trailer, but a colorful and expressive poster. Stance, setting, color, title…it all works.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: None.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, PART I, poster #5

Plot Summary: The first half of the final film in the acclaimed series takes Harry Potter and his friends Ron and Hermione and puts them square into the battle against Voldemart and his resurfaced army as they attempt to bring their new dominion to the world and kill Potter in the process.
Release Date: November 19, 2010

Poster

Previous Preview:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I
Rating: B-
Commentary: This is a poster more in tune with the film’s premise. The three leads running through the forest. It’s a key element (and often a tedious one) from the book, so it’s entirely fitting.

THE TOURIST, poster

Plot Summary: A tourist finds himself embroiled in an espionage thriller after being selected by a random beautiful woman on a train to be her distraction.
Release Date: December 10, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
The Tourist
Rating: B-
Commentary: My first thought was how bland the poster was. My second was how less like a skuzzy douchebag they made Johnny Depp look. He appears to be a disheveled husk of a man in the film, but this does help him stand out better…of course, that’s the power of airbrushing.

TRUE GRIT, poster

Plot Summary: To avenge her father’s murder, a young orphan seeks out a legendary sheriff to help her track down his killer.
Release Date: December 25, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
True Grit
Rating: C+
Commentary: While I expected the wild west motif of a wanted poster (not just wanted posters, but most people only recognize the font and design as such), but there is no image and just facing the title and stars alone isn’t exactly going to draw people to the film.
