Rating: D
Commentary: A close-up. Yes, it’s been done before. No, it still doesn’t work. I can’t imagine this being much of a sales tool, though if you understand Marion Cotillard’s “injuries,” it is somewhat poignant.
Rating: B-
Commentary: The makers of the trailer deftly avoided any revelation of the accident that befalls Marion Cotillard, but careful examination will reveal the facts of the case and make it look like a more engaging film than surface impressions can provide. On the one hand, I like that it’s attempting to be subtle and not beat the audience over the head, but on the other, I worry that such a practice could backfire.

Oscar Chances: There is talk of an Oscar nomintaion for previous winner Marion Cotillard, and the film’s challenging subject could benefit it in the writing categories. The film wasn’t submitted to the Oscars, so don’t expect it in the Foreign Language Film category.
