Can Barbie three-peat? Well, it first has to get past this week’s two new releases, the sequel no one asked for (The Meg 2) and The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Maymen. The studio is flogging this TMNT film like it’s the new Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but it’s tracking like it isn’t. The TMNT are popular and they could give Barbie a run for her money, but unless critics adore the film (which early word suggests they don’t), it’s unlikely to manifest sufficient ticket sales to win out in the end.

WIDE RELEASES

THE MEG 2: THE TRENCH

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM

The Meg 2: The Trench

Wesley Lovell: I had zero interest in the original and I have less than that in the sequel.

Peter J. Patrick: I have absolutely no interest in this.

Thomas La Tourrette: I did not see the original film five years ago and I see no reason to see this one.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Wesley Lovell: These characters never appealed to me and the film’s previews haven’t been appealing either.

Peter J. Patrick: Might be cute and clever for some but not for me.

Thomas La Tourrette: It does not look like a good animated film. I have no interest in the franchise and this creates no spark to get me involved, even with critics liking it.

WHAT COMES AROUND

The Limited Slate

Wesley Lovell: Not much really jumps out of this list for me, though a few have a modest amount of potential.

Peter J. Patrick: Brother and Dreamin’ Wild look to be the best of this group, but several of the others might be worth catching as well.

Thomas La Tourrette: The critics liked a few of these films, but the trailers did not make any of them look that interesting. Perhaps a few more good reviews might convince me to see one or two of them, but not really planning on any of them right now.
