This week has two films that could be hits, but three films that could be misses. We’ll start with the latest in the Evil Dead series, the most likely of the three wide releases to be a box office hit. Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant also has a chance of succeeding, but more likely will fail. Chevalier is listed as a wide release now, but I can’t imagine a film like that releasing that wide. If it does, it’s sure to be a flop.

WIDE RELEASES

CHEVALIER

EVIL DEAD RISE

GUY RITCHIE’S THE COVENANT

Chevalier

Wesley Lovell: A period drama about a Black musician has a lot of potential, but the trailer itself is uninspired, so it might not be that great.

Peter J. Patrick: Historical drama could be interesting, but the trailer doesn’t compel me to sell it.

Thomas La Tourrette: I found the trailer more off-putting than interesting.

Evil Dead Rise

Wesley Lovell: I’ve never quite gotten into the Evil Dead films, so I’ll pass.

Peter J. Patrick: Looks like pure schlock.

Thomas La Tourrette: I have not actually seen any of the Evil Dead films, though this has me somewhat intrigued to see one, if not this one.

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant

Wesley Lovell: Guy Ritchie’s films are mostly miss, but Jake Gyllenhaal’s are much more interesting. This could be, but it also might not be.

Peter J. Patrick: Possibly compelling drama but I’ve been disappointed by Ritchie’s films so many times that I have to take a wait and see approach to this one.

Thomas La Tourrette: It could be gripping, but it does feel like other movies we have seen lately.

LIMITED RELEASES

BEAU IS AFRAID

THE BEST MAN

CARMEN

GRINGA

OTHER PEOPLE’S CHILDREN

PLAN 75

SOMEWHERE IN QUEENS

TO CATCH A KILLER

WAR OF THE WORLDS: THE ATTACK

The Limited Slate

Wesley Lovell: A couple of titles this week, Carmen and War of the Worlds I’m quite interested while Beau Is Afraid, Gringa, and Plan 75 also have potential.

Peter J. Patrick: Lots of maybes but only one solid want-to-see, the Japanese sci-fi drama Plan 75.

Thomas La Tourrette: The foreign films, Carmen and Plan 75, look by far the most interesting, the first for its style the second for its story. A few others might be worth catching, but probably on DVD rather than in theaters. Only The Best Man looks to be an absolute miss.
