A plethora of potential box office champs are scheduled for release but the battle will likely come down to The Cat in the Hat vs. Godzilla Minus Zero. While Godzilla has become popular again in the West, Cat in the Hat is appealing to families and both will have a chance to take the top spot. In the end, families are often a more potent demographic so I’m giving that film the edge.

The One (Limited)
Soul Patrol (Limited)

WIDE RELEASES
THE CAT IN THE HAT GODZILLA MINUS ZERO JIMMY RAMAYANA WILD HORSE NINE

The Cat in the Hat

Wesley Lovell: It looks like a tepid Dr. Seuss adaptation that goes for endearing and charming but ends up cloying and unappealing.

Pete Patrick: The 1971 TV version is beloved, but the 2003 theatrical version is loathed.  This one looks to be closer in spirit to the TV version.

Godzilla Minus Zero

Wesley Lovell: I modestly enjoyed its predecessor but the excessive praise of the film has soured me on the potential of the new one since the same people who overhyped Minus One are the same ones declaring the new one is the second coming as well.

Pete Patrick: I loved 2023’s Godzilla Minus One and this sequel has gotten even better early reviews.

Jimmy

Wesley Lovell: Jimmy Stewart is an interesting figure but considering the source and star of this, I doubt it will be worth watching (much like Reagan wasn’t). That said, KJ Apa does a serviceable Stewart impression.

Pete Patrick: Trailer for James Stewart bio looks corny but could work.

Ramayana

Wesley Lovell: I haven’t seen a Bollywood film yet that I genuinely loved and this one looks like one of the more outlandish ones.

Pete Patrick: Bollywood epic could be either hit or miss.

Wild Horse Nine

Wesley Lovell: Martin McDonagh has made some great films, some over rewarded (Three Billboards), some undrewarded (Banshees of Inisherin). This looks a bit too much like In Bruges but early buzz is strong so it should be worth checking out.

Pete Patrick: Martin McDonagh’s latest may not be as great as Three Billboards or Banshees of Inisherin but is nevertheless something to look forward to.

LIMITED RELEASES
BEING HEUMANN CLUB KID I PLAY ROCKY THE LAST TEMPTATION OF BECKY

The Limited Slate

Wesley Lovell: Being Heumann is said to be a terrific movie about challenging the status quote and Club Kid has gotten good early responses. So too has I Play Rocky but I’m not a fan of the original Best Picture winner this documents the production of, so I will probably sit it out for now.

Pete Patrick: Being Heumann, Club Kid and I Play Rocky all have the support of major critics and seem at least worth checking out.
