This week is a big one. It’s the last major weekend of the year with no fewer than eight different titles opening wide. There are even a few major Oscar contenders too. The only one that really needs a majorly successful run is The Color Purple. Unfortunately, it’s going to struggle against Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom for the top of the box office.

OTHER RELEASES

We are only looking at films that have had trailers released on Rotten Tomatoes’ trailer YouTube Channels. Below are some other films that are releasing this weekend that we haven’t considered.

Salaar: Part 1 Ceasefire (Wide)
Breakwater (Limited)
CHAAW: Chapter 3 (Limited)
Dunki (Limited)
Farewell, Mr. Haffmann (Limited)
Neru (Limited)
Noryang: Deadly Sea (Limited)

WIDE RELEASES

ANYONE BUT YOU

AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM

THE BOYS IN THE BOAT

THE COLOR PURPLE

FERRARI

THE IRON CLAW

MIGRATION

Anyone But You

Wesley Lovell: It looks fairly generic, but the leads are attractive and that alone might give it some heft.

Peter J. Patrick: Looks like a dumb romcom.

Thomas La Tourrette: Looks like a typical and not terribly original or good rom com.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Wesley Lovell: The prior film was a disappointment and after hearing what its star has had to say about real life events, I’m less than enthusiastic about supporting him.

Peter J. Patrick: I’m not into this franchise.

Thomas La Tourrette: I am getting tired of superhero movies, but this might be okay.

The Boys in the Boat

Wesley Lovell: George Clooney makes good movies, though they aren’t always worth catching upon release.

Peter J. Patrick: Old school family drama looks interesting.

Thomas La Tourrette: It looks like an uplifting film that should be interesting too.

The Color Purple

Wesley Lovell: I have seen this film and while I don’t think it’s one of the year’s best, it’s a solid effor that deserves to succeed just so we can get more films about Black figures made.

Peter J. Patrick: I will see it , but I doubt it will be anywhere as good as the original.

Thomas La Tourrette: I always like musicals, but have no idea how good or not this one will be.

Ferrari

Wesley Lovell: The trailers haven’t looked good and the dramatics appear to be somewhat tepid.

Peter J. Patrick: Looks like another good old-fashioned movie-movie.

Thomas La Tourrette: The trailer was not that interesting, but it should have good cinematography, editing, and a performance worth seeing from Penรฉlope Cruz.

The Iron Claw

Wesley Lovell: While early word is strong, I can’t say I’m enthusiastic about it.

Peter J. Patrick: It’s getting decent reviews, but I’m not completely sold on it.

Thomas La Tourrette: It sounds like it has a transformative performance from Zac Efron, so it should be worth seeing just for that.

Migration

Wesley Lovell: A good animated film is always worth seeing. I’m just not sure if this will be that good.

Peter J. Patrick: Doesn’t look like anything special.

Thomas La Tourrette: I often try to see the animated films, though this one looks only average. It does boast good voice talent.

LIMITED RELEASES

ALL OF US STRANGERS

THE CRIME IS MINE

FREUD’S LAST SESSION

MEMORY

THE TEACHERS’ LOUNGE

The Limited Slate

Wesley Lovell: There’s an interesting smattering of titles this week with All of Us Strangers and The Crime Is Mine the best bets with The Teachers’ Lounge a strong possibility.

Peter J. Patrick: I will see All of Us Strangers, Memory, and Freud’s Last Session for sure.

Thomas La Tourrette: All of Us Strangers sounds fascinating and bizarre and is the one of these I most want to see. The Crime Is Mine looks like a fun romp. Freud’s Last Session intrigues because of the people portrayed. Memory and the probable Oscar nominee as international film The Teacher’s Lounge are possibilities, but neither of their trailers elicit that much excitement.
